18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Travel

The first glimpse pilgrims get of Lalibela, sitting high on a plateau on 2.630 m altitude amidst Lasta highland. The houses in the valley are new and built by the government and don´t belong to the mystic village. All one can see of Lalibela are the hotels built right on the edge of the cliff. Hidden by the the edge lie the famous rock-hewn churches.
