Land, Power, and Resistance: The Story of Korail.
Korail, the largest informal settlement in Dhaka, shelters more than 200,000 people along the fragile edge of Gulshan Lake. Just across the water, gleaming towers and affluent neighborhoods stand in stark contrast to the struggles of this community. Since the 1990s, Korail has been set ablaze multiple times in attempts to evict its residents. Spanning nearly 100 acres, the land is now worth an estimated $400,000—its value fueling greed and power-hungry real estate interests eager to erase the slum for commercial gain. Yet, despite repeated devastation power and politics the people of Korail rise with an undefeated resilience, their resistance etched into the smoke and ashes that haunt its skyline.
