13th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Late Summer, Mississippi

On the border of my sister's yard lies a field, and after a day of swimming, the children grabbed Mason jars (yes, Mason jars) to collect the cotton they were determined to pick. Picking cotton is hard work, as they already knew, so when I grabbed my phone and asked for a quick picture as the sun was setting behind them brilliantly, my daughter, Stella, turned around with attitude. But this is life in Mississippi. A young girl in heart sunglasses, swimsuit on with abandon, tough but poised, full of bliss and curiosity, a Mason jar filled with cotton. Things don't change.
