14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
late summer on the James River

Though once the industrial capital of the south, Richmond Virginia has fared little better than the industrial giant of Detroit Michigan. Though it suffered declining population and a rising crime rate, however, the city sat at the banks of an undying provider; the James River. With enough power to center Richmond at the cross roads of the Civil War, this ancient artery has never failed the city. Now, well within the 21st century, the American city is being revived. Richmond has been filled with new life as younger generations fill once deserted buildings. it is with this picture that we can see the continued effort the James makes in the life of Richmond. It is here that the river refreshes and revives the vital tool to the cities growth, its young citizens. thus, as it always has, the river in the picture is providing the living force for the city of Richmond Virginia.
