Laundry Day on the River

At the start of my time in Africa, we left before dawn to head for a clinic in the Chikwawa District, Malawi. Right at sunrise, we drove down more than a mile of switchbacks into the Lower Shire Valley. I was amazed at how green everything was and the wide variation in topography. Then I started seeing people from the different villages walking or biking to market, to collect water or to go about the other errands of their day-to-day lives. At the first river crossing, I saw villagers doing laundry, bathing and swimming in the river, but this woman had found a spot away from the rest.
