Leaf-cutter Bee in Action
The patchwork leaf-cutter (Megachile centuncularis) is a solitary bee. Fascinating to watch, she tests several leaves till she finds one to her liking then cuts out a perfect semi-circular disc. She collects many of these 'patchwork' discs, which she glues together with saliva to line her nest-hole and build cells in which her larvae will live. As the photo shows, the bee has a preference for the leaves of a single bonsai tree in my garden, which she returns to until she has used up every leaf. This happens every year and it's usually the same tree.
