Life in Colour – Red, Green &… Purple

Photographing wild orchids is always surprising. The colours one encounters in nature are exceptional, especially when their match is exquisite. Gymnadenia conopsea is a rather imposing orchid, with a large inflorescence of about 80-100 flowers, pinkish to purple coloured. The orchid rewards its pollinators with its abundant nectar and usually attracts lots of butterflies, moths and beetles. On this instance, a Red Lily Beetle, Lilioceris merdigera (family Chrysomelidae), just landed on its flowers, giving me this beautiful colour combination and rare composition (Orchids of Romania, by Nora De Angelli & Dan Anghelescu, 2020).
