19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Life on Mars

Black water diving is a different type of night diving where you go several miles off the coast and drift in the dark. you are relatively shallow, usually between the surface and 40 feet, the bottom is 400+ feet, so good buoyancy is a must. A myriad of planktonic and bizarre creatures migrate upward from the depths after dark, making each dive a completely different experience. Since BW became frequent, several new species have been classified. In this shot a sea snail with wings.
