19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Light It Up!

Volunteering as a firefighter is a American tradition as old as the Nation itself and requires countless hours donated in preparation for emergencies of all types. An instructor from the Mississippi State Fire Academy signals for the ignition of a propane fire training prop as firefighters from Bolivar County Volunteer Fire Department Battalion One (Cleveland, MS) practice advancing hose lines. The objective is to produce an inter-locking fog of protective, cooling water which will allow the firefighter in the center to reach into the maelstrom and cut off the fire's fuel.
