14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Sustainable Travel
Light shining through a window in Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp, Poland.

Visiting Birkenau Concentration Camp in Krakow, Poland is my idea of a sustainable travel project. Although it may be intimidating and depressing, remembering and paying tribute to the victims of the Holocaust is an activity that should be encouraged. Not only this, but visiting this place is a way of keeping history alive and remembering past events. The photo contains a strong light source at the end of the room which to me symbolizes that in even the darkest times, light is present whether it be in the form of religion, friendship or just plain hope.
