19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Lily in White on Blue
A lily in white against blue pods looked like an Impressionist painting as it floated in the lake. It had what looked like age cracks (craquelure) and heavily applied paint (impasto) in some parts of it. I photographed it to preserve it forever.
