LIONESS IN A TREE

One interesting highlight at Lake Nakuru was watching a lone lioness, skirt round a group of rhinos and a herd of cape buffalos and then go up a tree near the road. The big cat went up a little bit initially and then, as if scouting for a good vantage point, climbed fairly high up. From its high perch it looked around the entire park, possibly trying to identify a suitable prey. It went up the branches reasonably confidently and sure-footedly - a clear indication that it was used to climbing onto the higher reaches of these large acacia trees. Admittedly, the lioness did not have the natural tree-climbing grace of her smaller arboreal spotted cousin, the leopard, but she was not ginger-footed about it either. There are not too many places in Africa where grown lions regularly climb trees and Lake Nakuru is one such destination.
