18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
llama

Portrait of a llama, I love the tradition of decorating llamas in the Andes, favorites are particularly dressed up. During Spring and Summer, the llama herds are always accompanied by their duena, to protect the crias (baby llama) from foxes and to keep the llamas out of quinoa fields. Once the babies are grown and the fields are harvested, the herds are unaccompanied during the week, often you'll see them gleaning harvested quinoa fields. On weekends, the duenas go find and check on their llamas.
