22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Artistic
Local Art

Driving west on Huron St. in Ann Arbor, one can look to the north and see this artistic creation on First St. The mural was painted by Jacob Dwyer, of A2AC Murals, to show the symbiotic relationship of two native Michigan birds: the red-bellied woodpecker and the eastern bluebird. The woodpecker stays year round, making holes for nesting in the spring and holes for roosting in the winter. The bluebird migrates south in the winter and when it returns in the spring, it sometimes uses woodpecker holes for nesting.
