13th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Lone Survivor
A single plant hangs on for life on the Eureka dunes of Death Valley National Park. Hiking across the dunes is no easy feat, as the sand gives way under every foot step. These particular dunes are well-suited for photography because of their remoteness, seeing far less visitors than other, more popular, dunes in the park.
