15th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Look where others don't

Outside of Bryce Canyon National Park you will find is a drive-thru site for most people. Red Canyon State Park doesn’t carry National Park status but the intense red colors of the rock and how they glow at sunset are really something to behold. On this night there was smoke in the air from a distant wildfires. It added some eerie and ominous color to the sky and made the setting sun standout a little more. I liked this shot for the desert elements from the sage brush to the lonely road and wide open vistas that make the Southwest such a special place.
