I was exploring a local festival on the National Mall in Washington, DC on a sunny Friday in June when my phone began to blow up. News of the historic marriage equality decision by the United States Supreme Court was spreading like wildfire. I rushed over to the Supreme Court building to capture the scene. When I arrived, the energy was electric. People were celebrating everywhere; waving rainbow flags, cheering, and embracing each other. Many couples got engaged right on the front steps of the Supreme Court—including the couple in this photo. For everyone in the LGBTQ community, including myself, this decision meant everything. A relationship between any two people bound in love and joy would finally be recognized as equally legal by our national government, and the benefits granted to straight couples could now be applied to everyone. It was a moment I will never forget.
