Luminarias

In the Avila town of San Bartolomé de Pinares, they have celebrated their traditional rite of Las Luminarias, a festival not without controversy. It consists of a group of neighbors on the back of their horses jumping over a large bonfire. They assure that the animals have never suffered any harm, that they are prepared to avoid any accident and that for them it is a rite of purification of their animals. The Animalista Party PACMA has denounced the cruelty to which horses are subjected at parties, which are forced to gallop through bonfires and trample on the embers. This tradition has already been condemned by animal activists around the world, after the images of this party have gone viral on social networks. Faced with criticism from animal rights defenders, the residents of this town of Ávila assure that the horses jump voluntarily and without fear because they never suffer any harm. January 16 is celebrated the day of San Anton, the patron saint of animals. In many towns and cities of Spain events and festivals are held to purify and bless the animals that contribute to work or those who faithfully accompany their owners for years. In San Bartolome de Pinares (Avila), a tradition of over 200 years continues to surprise for its spectacular risk. Luminaires are Avila, where horses and riders prepare to jump over bonfires and get across purified body and soul.
