16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest People
Lumineros
This photo was taken during the annual celebrations on 16 june, for Saint Ranieri, the patron saint of Pisa in Italy. Hundreds of volunteers help the city to attach and light thousands of candles in house facades on the side of the river Arno. They work for an entire day without being paid under the sun. They express the will of the city to create a magical moment. The atmosphere along the river becomes magic as the sun goes under the horizon to leave space to the romantic light from the candles. The celebrations ends with extremely beautiful fireworks above the river. I wanted to catch the passion of simple volunteers in creating this celebration.
