16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Lunar Love

A couple of friends hiked up to the summit of Koko Crater. Its a nasty & steep hike - on the East side of the Hawaiian island of Oahu. This picture was taken of them on 11-24-2018 as the moon arose behind them. No editing except a simple crop. I was approximately 1000 feet below and half a mile away on Lunalilo Home Road. this photo was very much arranged but it is 100% real. In the the couples hands are some props that they brought up with them to "silhouette" in front of the moon. The woman has a tassel in her hand. The man has a plastic filter paper box tucked under his right arm. The box was made to look like a wrapped birthday present but was not in this photo. The props were made by Alex Dzierba. I hope you all like this image. Aloha!
