15th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
A foggy day on Monterey Bay was highlighted by these lunge-feeding humpback whales. With schools of anchovies swimming near the surface, humpbacks, lunge through them with their mouths wide open, eating up to two tons of fish per day!
