16th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Altered Images
Lungs of the World
One of the largest remaining areas of mangroves in the world, the Sunderbans supports an exceptional level of biodiversity in both the terrestrial and marine environments, with over 300 saline tolerant plant species. The mangrove vegetation can bear the estuarine conditions as well as saline inundations brought in by tides. I could identify four different species of mangrove plants in this image - "Goran" (Ceriops decandra), "Bain" (Avicennia marina), "Hental" (Phoenix paludosa) and "Gaowa" (Excoecaria agallocha). Location: Sunderbans Biosphere, West Bengal state, India
