Grace Gifford was an Irish artist who married her fiance, Joseph Plunkett hours before he was executed in 1916 for his part in the Easter Rising in Dublin, Ireland. During the Irish Civil War, she was arrested and imprisoned in Kilmainham Gaol for several months in 1923. She painted Mary and Christ on the wall of her cell.
