18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Majestic in White

Pinnacle iceberg seen on a zodiac cruise around Ocean Harbor, South Georgia Island. Icebergs break off from Antarctica and ground themselves on the continental shelf of South Georgia Island. Icebergs vary in size and color. Take into account that most of this iceberg is below the water's surface to give you an idea as to its size. Icebergs are white when there are lots of snow particles or bubbles in the iceberg and all wavelengths of light are scattered before they get absorbed.
