19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Makeshift Museum of Anthotypes

This is a series of anthotypes that I have been making at home while the Philippines is still undergoing what is considered to be “the longest lockdown in the world.” When the pandemic began in 2020, I grew a crisis garden to have direct access to food. Later, I also started sourcing from my garden materials for art making because of movement restrictions and quarantine protocols that have made it difficult to purchase art materials. I extracted homemade emulsions from plants that I grow: ternatea flowers, serpentina leaves, onion skins and avocado seeds. It is amazing how nature allows us to develop images outside of the darkroom and under full sunlight, breathing fresh air instead of the toxic chemicals often used in photography. I hope to further explore this process because there is very little available research on it yet it is a technique that anyone can do at home with just a few plants and sunlight.
