14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Sustainable Travel
Male Lion
A male lion sleepily stares down our safari vehicle at the Inverdoorn Game Reserve outside of Cape Town, South Africa. Our guide turned off the engine and we sat in front of the lion for a short while as he shared his space with us. To me sustainable travel is interacting with and learning from the environment and the animals and people that inhabit different areas, and leaving them better off than you found them. This can be done through volunteer, donations, and especially education. In this case education through photography is effective in getting people to pay attention to a specific animal or topic that is important to you!
