22nd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Mama Moose
As I wander through Alaskan wilderness, a pregnant Moose makes sure I keep my distance. Little does she know I only want to shoot her with my telephoto lens as she trudges through knee-deep snow in solitude. For her, surviving winter is less about the cold as it is finding enough food. She'll forage on thousands of twigs and needles each day to provide some nutrition, but most likely will spend much of the season hungry, conserving energy by getting plenty of rest. Afterall, motherhood is also just around the bend.
