When I was casually scanning the plains on a cloudy morning in Maasai Mara, Kenya, I spotted a line of elephants in the far distance and noticed that it was not only the usual family of females and their young, but also attached to it and bringing up the rear was a large male with impressive tusks, in fact, the biggest tusks I have seen in males of Mara. M. Michael seemed in no particular hurry and so, after the ladies and their young had passed by me, I had plenty of time to compose a shot of him set against a bleached background. As he came in view, he cast a surprised glance in my direction but continued walking without breaking his rhythm and his mind back in the mental world of an elephant. The image speaks of a brief encounter in which a visual exchange takes place between beings from two different worlds. While he went his way, and I watched him go, we had implicitly agreed to co-exist in peace. I like to think so anyway.
