Mars on Earth

The otherwordly rock formations shown in the picture are located in Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness, in the northwestern corner of New Mexico. Translated from the Navajo language, Bisti (Bis-tie) means "a large area of shale hills" and De-Na-Zin (Deh-nah-zin) means "cranes". Bisti is comprised of a series of badlands, a type of arid terrain with clay-rich soil that has been extensively eroded by wind and water over time. The weathering of the sandstone forms hoodoos - weathered rock formations of unusual beauty.
