The effects of the Covid-19 pandemic has been quite serious on the lives and livelihood of Bangladeshi people. The virus itself however failed to cause much alarm, particularly in the rural communities across the country, given the prevalent perception of ‘corona’ being a rich man’s disease. While need for maintaining masks was disregarded widely, a lot of people nevertheless wore masks to comply with health and safety requirements. Bangladesh seemingly averted the Covid-19 casualties compared to many parts of the world. But the economic toll was not light. Loss of income and livelihood was rampant. This street vendor switched to selling face masks as they became among the most on-demand commodities.
