Maya

The Mayan Festival of Colmenar Viejo (Madrid, Spain) is celebrated every May 2 with Mayan displays on floral altars made for the occasion. It has been declared a Festival of tourist interest for the Community of Madrid and has a great tradition in the history of Colmenar Viejo, it revolves around girls and flowers and welcomes spring, with pagan roots of the cult of nature. La Maya is a girl dressed in petticoats (usually inherited from great-grandmothers, grandmothers or mothers) and a white shirt, Manila shawl (also usually inherited) tied behind her back, adorned for the occasion with multiple beads, necklaces and flowers in her hair. . She remains seated, very serious and without speaking, at an altar that her relatives have previously prepared with a multitude of flowers that have been collected from the fields the day before said party, white sheets and a curtain quilt. Next to her are her companions, some girls who, dressed in a similar way, although with the Manila shawl placed correctly, address the people with a brush and a tray asking "for the maya, for the maya, who is pretty and gallant». The ages of the participating girls ranged from one year to thirteen, approximately.
