18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World

Humans and orangutans share 97% of the genome. Along with chimpanzees and gorillas, they are our closest relatives in the animal world. The destruction of their habitats in the forests of South-East Asia, which are used for the cultivation of palm oil, is their main threat.
