18th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Midnight snack

It's late at night and our boat pulls into a sheltered bay where we drop anchor and begin to settle-down for dinner."Manta Manta" someone shouts and we all rush to the back of the boat to see what all the fuss is about. When i looked down into the water my jaw almost hit the floor. There was single manta ray looping continuously under the the light of the boat, feeding on all the plankton which was being drawn to the surface by the bright lights above. I grabbed my equipment and slid quietly into the water, trying not to disturb the manta as i set up the shot. Luckily the manta was not bothered by my presence and thankfully so, as this was an extremely challenging picture to get due to the very high dynamic range and complex lighting.
