Mike & Nancy is intended to be displayed as a diptych portraiture of my stepfather and my mother. The images of each of them individually were curated by myself intending to portray their dynamic as a married couple at present. Mike was diagnosed with stage metastatic lung cancer just after the COVID-19 pandemic went into full swing following Thanksgiving 2019. We received the news that his then perceived pneumonia was much more serious. Since that time his health has drastically declined and he remains at home on oxygen almost constantly. My mother, Nancy works a full time job in healthcare while taking hours and hours of sick leave to drive him to and from appointments as well as see to my 90 year old grandmother that moved in with the two of them a few years ago just before my grandfather's (Nancy's father) passing. This dual portrait was about the the weakness and disillusions Mike has been forced to face in receiving his health's fate as he had just become grandfather to my niece that same year and had dreams of how he could watch her grow. Since his diagnosis he has made every effort to babysit and play with his granddaughter as much as possible. My mother's image is looking at him, because while his focus remains on the family and struggling to stay with us and to stay mentally and emotionally as strong as he can, her focus remains on him and her family's well being. These are two truly incredible humans that have made my life unimaginably memorable and special through a consistent demonstration of unconditional love daily. They will have been married 22 years in February of 2022. They will be saying goodbye to our home of 22 years by the end of 2021 in listing our house for sale so as to better make ends meet and downsize on household obligations to focus on our family's health and quality of life.
