14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Milky Way creeping along the night sky over Rodanthe, North Carolina.
As I was sitting on the porch of a beach house in the Outer Banks, I gazed up to se how clear the night sky was. I grabbed my camera and placed it on the railing of the porch with my phone underneath it to allow a tilt (I did not have a tripod). Just as I did, the Milky Way slowly crept across the deep, mystic night sky.
