Mock Airplane Crash for Firefighter Training

Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, is the site of the former US Sondrestrom Air Base, formerly part of the DEW Line monitoring system that had outposts across the North American Arctic. The base closed in 1992, but all the military infrastructure, including old fuel tanks, was left behind. On the outskirts of town, one of the tanks has been repurposed into this strange structure in the center of a cleared flat area. I puzzled over its purpose since clearly a lot of effort had gone into sawing through the steel and constructing it. On an overcast day, it looked like the set for an apocalyptic movie. I later found out that it was a mock airplane crash that in the 1980s would be set on fire so the firefighters could practice on it. That made sense of one particular section that had struck me as odd — the bars supporting a sideways barrel projecting from one side represent an airplane wing and propeller.
