20th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Mom and cub, mountain rodents

Ñeque or guatín are the common names by which the species (Dasyprocta punctata) is known in Colombia. It is a medium rodent that is distributed in Central and South America; agile and fast when it must escape its natural predators. It commonly feeds on fruits on the forest floor. Although it is not a rare species of mammal, photographing it in its natural environment, with its cub, is still a special and captivating event of its intimacy.
