14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Monarch Butterfly on Long Beach Island New Jersey very detailed view of its face and eye.
I saw this butterfly on a butterfly bush. This is three houses from the Atlantic Ocean and is a 18 mile barrier island. We see so many migratory Monarchs. In order to capture this shot. I stayed by the butterfly and observed it without while staying still. I was able to gain it trust. I used a Cannon with a macro lens. This one allowed me to be inches from it. It used its tongue to suck out the nectar. It was looking in my eyes and showed no fear. After, it flew to a pine tree where it rested from its meal.
