Moose calf seeks attention from mother

A moose cow and calf forage during the first snowfall of the year in the Utah mountains. Moose calves stay with their mother for the first year of their life, during which time the mother is fiercely protective. Moose calves face the threat of predation from larger apex predator species, but climate change has created a new threat to their survival. As winters get warmer, moose tick populations have increased. Moose calves in tick infested areas face nutrient deficiencies that stunt their development and in severe cases can result in death.
