21st Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Morning Glory

Morning Glory, shot with an infrared filter on a monochrome digital camera. Plants absorb energy from the sun and soil and transform it into sources of energy for humans, animals, and other living things. Similarly, infrared photographs capture a type of energy that is normally invisible because it exists outside the spectrum of visible light. Revealing the infrared aspect of the plants echoes the unseen but beneficial energy they produce. It is also a reminder that visible objects and processes are just a small subset of the universe that contains us. Nature comprises many powerful forces – some known, others yet to be discovered – that are beyond the perception of our five human senses.
