19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Mother and Child

I have been studying the design forms that are created by the changing of the tides along the beaches near my home in Southern New Jersey, USA. In particular the time just before and after low tide. I watch for weather patterns just before or after storm fronts move through. In this particular image a storm was moving in so I got in my car and rushed down to the beach. It was low tide and I had about five minutes to capture an image before the rain started. I noticed a nice shape in the sand that reminded me of a Mother holding her child. I quickly set up and recorded the image.
