Mother and Child Reunion

I had been following this nest of Pileated Woodpeckers for several months. On this particular day, I had wanted to try and photograph a feeding. I had watched long enough to know that the parents cared for the young in shifts. The male would sit in the cavity with the chicks until about 5:30 p.m. Then he'd start sticking his head out of the hole in anticipation of his mate's arrival. She would start calling and getting closer and closer to the hole until, at long last, she would fly to the tree and he would launch himself out of the cavity. As sh ratched up to the tree hole, one of the chicks started begging and I captured this photo.
