19th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Mother and Daughter
A mother Bonnet Macaque (Macaca radiata) rests for a moment on a huge Banyan Tree (Ficus benghalensis) with her baby daughter. This group of Macaque monkeys frequent this tree regularly and I spent a few days photographing them and their behavior. Macaques are strictly diurnal and begin their activity as soon as the sun rises and continue till darkness prevails. This group consisted of around 25 individuals including the Alpha male and 3 other males, a few females and juveniles.
