12th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
Mother and her baby

My friend's mother suffered a severe stroke a few months back. Now wheel chair bound and barley cognizant. My friend is exhausted balancing caring for his mom and his own career and family. This role reversal has become common place as baby boomer ages, and modern medicine pushes back the grim reaper. But the quality of this extended life often doesn't live up to expectation. Along with the escalating medical cost, the sandwich generation in America will continue to be stretched ever thinner.
