17th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Mother Protection
A mother polar bear and her 1.5 years old cub are curling up on floating ice in the arctic ocean. The ice in the arctic is melting rapidly mainly due to the global warming. The outcome is a reduction in the polar bears' hunting areas. That's one of the reasons that polar bears have been found lately a few times in inhabited areas searching for food.
