23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Wildlife
Mother Protector

Every year, thousands of Humpback whales grace the warm nursery waters of Tonga to give birth and raise their young until strong enough to migrate to Antarctic feeding grounds. A journey of 6,000 kilometers, these whales social bonds are incredible strong and for being such massive animals, incredible gentle as well, especially between mothers and their young.
