14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
The real Mother of the nuclear family
This was one of the first pictures I took for photography class my senior year of high school, and therefore one of my first times using a 35mm camera. Home from boarding school for the weekend, I needed a model, and my mom was less than excited to be photographed that night. This combination resulted in a very dramatic look. The mixture of prints, the glass of wine, the stressful gesture of pulling one's hair, and of course the light, give the photo an anxious feeling. To me this picture says, "I just can't do it." The true American mother, apart from the nuclear family, alone at the kitchen table.
