17th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest Natural World
Mount Oberlin - Glacier National Park

This past September I visited one of my favorite National Parks yet again. I find autumn to be a magical time in Glacier National Park for a number of reasons. The cooler weather, autumn foliage, waning tourist traffic all contribute to a more exciting experience for photographing. I also seem to meet wonderful people during this time of year, perhaps ‘birds of a feather’. On this particular day, the weather was cool and and the air was crystal clear as I hiked along the Highline Trail toward Flat Top. I believe I had hiked about four miles in with my 30lb pack of camera gear, when I came across this incredible view of Mt. Oberlin and Cannon in the distance. The drop off was fairly steep, adding to dramatic view. I can’t recommend enough that you hike this trail if you ever visit Glacier NP.
