Thirayattam is a ritual performing ethnic art form of Kerala state that blends facial and body painting, masking, music, dance, theatre, satire, and martial art. Enacted in the courtyards of sacred groves and village shrines, it is traditionally performed by the Perumannan, Panan and Cherumar communities. Only the natural objects like tender coconut palm leaf, areca nut palm leaf, bamboo, nutshell, wood etc are used. Makeup is done using four colors made of Ayurvedic medicines. Red is made out of turmeric and pomegranate pulp and yellow out of turmeric, white from rice flour and black by mixing oil and snuff. Thirayattams are of many types accompanied by choottukali (fire dance).
