14th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest The American Experience
My dog, Rolfie, on the Charles Bridge at dawn.

I was going through a divorce abroad and I needed to get away so I took my dog to Prague. For me this photo represents a time in my life when I went against what everyone thought was "best for me." I had the perfect life. A move to Amsterdam with my successful, international businessman husband, Europe at my fingertips. But, the American Dream was dead for me. You can see the professional photographer in the back looking at me like "what are you doing taking a pic of your dog when there is an award winning sunrise photo in the city of a thousand spires ?" I needed to connect with myself and connect with the only being I felt supported by in that time, my dog. We all go through changes in life, sometimes you don't prescribe to what others think is the best, including the "best" photo. For me, this image shows that it's best to follow your dreams, your heart and take a risk even when you feel like your world is ending.
